A fun historical event that history buffs and locals love is Florida Flywheeler’s. This event brings history to life three times a year, November, January and February. These events loring 35,000 visitors a year to our area. Centered around a recreated old village, Florida Flywheeler’s exhibits include antique engines and tractors, an old firehouse, old gas station, model T cars and more. Tractor pulls are also offered during this event.

Fort Meade has traditionally been the kind of town where residents participate in regular community events. With several events happening throughout the year and new events taking shape, good things are in store.

In January spend the weekend at the Alafia River Rendezvous, the Southeast’s largest pre-1840s interpretive encampment. Participants portray several cultures and the lifestyle of early settlers. You’ll enjoy sarsaparilla, old fashioned root beer, the various cuisines of the time and just interacting with the frontiersmen and women. Over 100 craftsmen and stores set up shop so whether you’re buying or browsing there’s plenty to discover.

Other fun events include Christmas on Broadway and the Red Hot & Blue July 4th Celebration. The Maypole celebration signifies the beginning of springtime. Elementary school students gather together at the Fort Meade Historical Museum to join and spectate the Maypole dance with its kaleidoscope of ribbons and flowers. Held in July, young fishing enthusiasts ages 4 to 14 can participate in the All-American Fishing Derby at Patterson Park coordinated by Leisure Services, 863-285-1111.

The Saturday before Halloween is a costume contest at Patterson Park. Keep a lookout for more new events yet to come. Contact the Fort Meade Chamber of Commerce for more information.
